A woman has defended reports of excessive crime in her city neighbourhood after a neighbour brandished the block of flats they live in as "unliveable".

Earlier this month Terence Cain, who also lives in Caro Court, said he has been dealing with "unliveable circumstances" for several years and that "the area is an absolute dive" rife with crime and anti-social behaviour.

Charlotte Galt has lived in the flats, in St Benedicts Street, for eight years and four months ago gave birth to her daughter, Amara.

She believes the area has received an unfair rap and was "genuinely shocked" when she heard about the incidents happening there.

The 43-year-old said: "I think expecting somewhere like this to be idyllic and peaceful is a little short-sighted.

"Living at the front to a busy thoroughfare with pubs and restaurants nearby you're bound to hear noises.

"It's a slightly noisier area but that's to be expected here I think.

"The drug-taking was a one-off incident and not something that happens often.

"Broadland Housing Association have done all they can, like putting up CCTV, to combat the few instances of anti-social behaviour which have occurred here.

"There are also police patrols coming in to check the car park and keep it secure."

Terence and his family confirmed they have been in contact with both Norwich City Council and Broadland Housing Association about being rehomed.

While Charlotte has taken issue with the problems raised, she feels the area is "quite vibrant".

Charlotte added: "I think it's a regular city centre flat and there's nothing unusual about the area.

"But I don't want people thinking it's some sort of crack den - because it's not.

"Everyone has their own perspective on things but I feel like the person's frustration is misplaced.

"Saying the area is unliveable - I just don't see it."
