Weapons, drugs and constant vandalism are just some of the issues plaguing a city flat block and causing families to live in fear.

A flat in Foulgers Opening, behind the Berstrete Gates pub in Ber Street, was condemned by police officers on Thursday, making it a crime for anyone except the tenant, Orbit Housing or social services to be inside the property.

Those living in the area say it is "hell" with some too scared to walk through the estate at night.

One neighbour, who has children, said: "There's been fighting, drug dealing and taking as well as shouting abuse at each other.

"It's been hell, to be honest.

"There's been weapons, drugs and cash seized from there - the amount of people who've been arrested there is crazy.

"We've been trying to move but no one wants to exchange because of how horrid the area is.

"All the person's windows have been put through - I'm not sure why they even replace them because it just constantly happens.

"It's really affected me and my children.

"Even though it says they can't have anyone in the flat for three months it won't stop people because they just don't care."

Working with Orbit Housing, police attained a closure order from Norwich Magistrates' Court to shut the flat on grounds of anti-social behaviour.

A spokesman from Obit said: "We do not condone anti-social behaviour in any of our properties, and work closely with the police to take appropriate action if we receive reports of this nature.

"We encourage all of our customers to continue to report incidents of anti-social behaviour to ourselves and the police."

Another tenant, living in the flats opposite where the condemned property is, added: "The person moved in about two years ago after a drug dealer was in there.

"Somehow this person is worse - we couldn't believe it.

"There's been non-stop complaints, police raids, constant drugs and windows being smashed around 4am to 5am - the most recent incident was last week when another window was cracked.

"I've seen someone laying at the bottom steps of the flat covered in blood before, someone wielding some sort of weapon and people breaking into the flat.

"Everyone has given up contacting the police - at this point we all just want to leave but nobody is going to exchange with us because they see the state of the building.

"It's just the worst kind of crack den."

The closure order notices were put in place by officers from the Norwich Operational Partnership Team.

It comes after Norfolk Constabulary released data that showed anti-social behaviour offences across the city have risen by 10pc in the last year alone.

Another woman with children, who has lived in the flats opposite for eight years, said the area has changed for the worse,

She said: "My kids have seen police raids, people jumping in and out of windows and blood everywhere - they shouldn't be seeing that when they're so young.

"I finish work in the evening and I'm scared to walk home.

"I'm petrified coming home at night because you don't know what might be happening, but it shouldn't be like that.

"It's been condemned for three months, but it won't stop - people will still go in there.

"I've been trying to get out for the last three years but no one wants to come here - it's awful.

"I hate living here."
