After campaigning to prevent rat-running for more than a year, a city centre community saw a bollard ripped out of the ground on the SAME DAY it was put in.

The obstruction was installed at the junction of King Street and Mountergate on Tuesday but was knocked to the ground just hours later.

It was fixed earlier today, with a Norfolk County Council spokeswoman explaining: “The bollard was installed as Mountergate is now closed to through traffic.

"Driving down it is an offence that can be enforced by the police.

“The decision to close the road was made when scaffold and hoarding associated with an adjacent site were removed.

“Unfortunately, a member of the public removed the bollard shortly after it was installed."

Neighbours in King Street were not happy it had been ripped out and are being more vigilant to ensure that the bollard stays put this time.

A spokesman for the King Street Neighbours group said: “We want the bollard. King Street is not a through road, nor has it ever been.

“People should not come down King Street unless they live here or are visiting – there is no through road!”

They said that there was originally a bollard there that was removed for the St Anne's Wharf building work, which is now complete.

The spokesman added: “Unfortunately some road users think they can just remove it which is criminal damage, we will report this kind of behaviour to the police.

"The access to St Anne's wharf is from Rose Lane, not King Street."

Neighbours have also reported cars racing in the road at night, causing concerns about danger for pedestrians and cyclists.
