A city school's football team narrowly missed out on winning a national trophy at Wembley Stadium.

Thorpe St Andrew School's under-13 girls represented Norwich City in the Utilita Girls Cup, narrowly missing the trophy in a marathon penalty shootout.

The final event took place on the Wembley pitch ahead of the Bristol Street Motors EFL Trophy final between male professional teams Peterborough and Wycombe.

The match against Wirral Grammar School for Girls U13s, who represented Tranmere Rovers, proved a tense goalless draw in regular time.

However, a 7-6 victory in the penalty shootout led to Tranmere clinching the victory.

Earlier, Thorpe St Andrew School had defeated Monmouth Comprehensive School, representatives of Newport County, 2-1 to secure their place in the final.

A school spokesman said: "After a predictably tight and cagey match between the best two EFL teams in the country, the game finished 0-0.

"After a series of excellent penalties, it took a great save to win it, and we lost 7-6. It’s been an amazing run and we are so proud of the girls. Great memories."

The Thorpe players and coaches were then able to enjoy prime Club Wembley seats for the main event, as Peterborough beat Wycombe 2-1 in the EFL Trophy final.
