A city business owner says she has "found her place" a year after opening a now-popular fish and chip shop.

Previously known as Silver Fish Bar in NR3, the Silver Road chippy was given a new lick of paint and renamed to the Family Fish Bar when it was opened on December 15 last year by co-owners Shelley Plant and partner Mahmut Harput.

In the year since there have been ups and downs for the business but Shelley, who lives above the shop, wouldn't have changed a thing.

Shelley said: "The last year has been a whirlwind but I've absolutely loved it here.

"The first week we were so overwhelmed with queues around the corner but now we've got it down to a tee.

"It's home for me now - I've found my place here in NR3.

"We've got plenty of characters who come into the shop who have become regulars and we all have so much fun with them."

Despite the strong start there were some challenges for the pair after chippies were hit with a huge spike in potato prices, which could've ended the business.

Shelley added: "Around summer potato prices went up to £26 a bag and if that had continued it would have finished us, honestly.

"Thankfully it's come back down and is much more manageable but it was very worrying at the time."

The fish bar has not been shy at trying new things, launching a vegan option and being tickled pink in October after offering customers pink batter to raise money for Breast Cancer Awareness.

"We've had great support," added Shelley.

"While we don't want to change the menu too much we're hoping to expand our Vegan range - all the while continuing to provide traditional fish and chips.

"We love the NR3 area and can't wait for the year ahead."
