An empty fish and chip shop just outside the city centre has been given a second chance by new owners.

Previously known as Silver Fish Bar in NR3 the old chippy has been given a new lick of paint and renamed to the Family Fish Bar, which opened on December 15.

New owners, husband and wife duo Shelley Plant and Mahmut Harput, are looking to bring the family-friendly experience back to the Silver Road shop as well as traditional fish and chips.

Shelley Plant, who lives above the shop, received the keys in November and spent a month restoring it.

She said: "We wanted to come back and be closer to family who live here.

"It was a bit run down but we're hoping to bring it back to its former glory where people will get a warm greeting, good quality food and for a reasonable price - there's no fancy gimmicks here.

"Between me and Mahmut we have more than 40 years experience in the industry and we're looking to make this place somewhere the community can rely on for good food.

"We're staying away from ordering online or trying to do loads of different options - in that way it's a bit of a throwback - with old fashioned, family values."

The shop will focus mainly on selling fish and chips while also offering a range of vegan options which are cooked separately from the rest.

Shelley currently runs the shop herself while Mahmut runs Tasty Bites, located in Leiston, Suffolk, but said the plan at some point is "to close the Suffolk shop so my husband can come and help run this one".

She added: "We want the community to know who we are, and we want to know them too.

"The first couple of weeks here have been fantastic and we've had people who haven't been here for years and can see what we're trying to do.

"Fish and chips is a British food staple and our ethos is we don't let anything go out here that we wouldn't eat ourselves."
