Two UEA students were horrified to discover their car and dozens more destroyed in a vehicle-smashing spree.

Juliette Rebold Stead and her housemate Hanna Aarvold-Riley, 23 and 22 respectively, who live in Friends Road, Earlham, were dismayed to find themselves the victims of a mass vandal attack on Tuesday night.

More than 30 vehicles in Earlham and Bowthorpe had windows smashed, bodywork dented and wing mirrors torn off in a 24-hour rampage.

"We were making dinner and got a knock at the door from two of our neighbours asking if this was our car," Juliette said.

"We ran outside and saw the devastation.

"Fifteen other cars along our road were also targeted and we called the police and waited for them to come.

"When they arrived, they told us forensics were on the way to take DNA and fingerprints from the rocks which were used to smash the windows."

Photographs of the car show the front and rear windows smashed, with shattered glass shards covering the seats inside.

Two teenage boys have since been arrested on suspicion of criminal damage and taken for questioning.

The damage, while in most cases is covered by insurance, could cause great distress to those who don't wish to have their premiums raised by breaking a no-claims policy.

This is a greater problem for students and young people who make up a large demographic in the area, including Juliette and Hanna who both study at the UEA.

"It is a road that is made up mainly of students and older people," Juliette added.

Aaron White, 31, who lives nearby said vehicles in Marlpit and West Earlham were also targeted.

He said: “There is anti-social behaviour here every single day.

"I wasn't surprised when I found thugs had ransacked the area and smashed car windows because youths in this area don’t have fear of reprisals or comeuppance - they have no respect.

"My eldest will be going to high school in the next 12 months and as a parent, you do have to be fearful for your kids.

"It's not quite London but it is going that way."
