The county council has hit back at accusations it is not doing enough to promote a struggling park and ride service on the edge of the city.

The Postwick Park and Ride has been fighting to attract more users since reopening on a trial basis seven weeks ago.

Those travelling in and out of Norwich had been urged by Norfolk County Council to make the most of the service to ensure the project doesn't fall flat.

But despite the introduction of simpler and cheaper fares, passenger numbers are below what was expected - with some blaming the council for not doing enough to promote the service.

Speaking at a Postwick with Witton Parish Council meeting, one local said the authority was responsible for "shortcomings in signage, route and lack of publicity".

"[I would] like other parishes to campaign to keep it running," they added.

Eleanor Laming, Green Party councillor for the Brundall ward, also called for greater promotion of the service.

"Usage hasn't been as high as we hoped," she said. "But there hasn't been a great deal of publicity since the initial reopening announcement.

"I know some households were leafleted and there was a poster in the Postwick bus stop.

"But since then there has been nothing and we really need to get the word out there.

"It would be great to have signs put along the A47 so people coming in from the east knew about it.

"The Greater Norwich Local Plan calls for improved transport infrastructure to support development.

"But I'm not sure enough is being done about that."

A spokesman for Norfolk County Council hit back at criticisms, arguing: “We have been actively promoting Postwick Park and Ride through the press, social media and leaflet drops to surrounding communities since it opened seven weeks ago.

"We also saw the introduction of simpler and cheaper fares with an adult paying just £3 for all-day travel, and additional passengers who travel with a full paying passenger pay just £1.

"With under fives still travelling for free, park and ride is a great option for a family day out over the festive season.

“There has been an increase in passenger numbers across the other park and ride sites since the reduced fares were introduced, but the figures for Postwick are still below what they need to be. We would encourage anyone who is travelling into the city to consider using park and ride."

Postwick P&R timeline

The Postwick Park and Ride site is owned by Norfolk County Council and had buses running in and out of the city centre, managed by Konectbus, before it opened as a Covid testing centre in 2020.

The council temporarily reopened the site between November 21 and December 24 last year for the festive trading season.

But buses stopped after that and local councillors, as well as folk living in Postwick, pleaded for the council to reopen it.

On September 4, those travelling in and out of the city were told to use it or lose it as it would be reopening for a four-month trial period.
