After leaving its long-running pub kitchen residency this summer, a city burger brand is thriving at its new spot in a hidden corner of the Norwich Lanes.
The Bun Exchange, now renamed The Bun X, left the Butcher Bhoy in Exchange Street in August and it quickly secured a pop-up space at The Micawbers Tavern, where Pottergate meets Cow Hill.
I headed there on Friday night to check out their new home, which is Tardis-like as a tiny front opens out into a spacious yet cosy pub, complete with low ceilings, wooden beams and fairy lights.

Friendly waitress Holly talked us through the menu - including smashed beef patties or chicken burgers, sides and wings.
I opted for the sharing feast tray, which is a stellar deal with two burgers, fries and a side for £30 - my friend and I chose the Big Macawbers and Camemjam, respectively, seasoned fries and chicken tenders.

My Big Macawbers, The Bun X's version of a Big Mac taken to heavenly heights, was a perfectly structured tower of pure delight.

The quality of the beef was excellent and as the burgers are smashed it had a crispy sear on the outside but was lovely and juicy inside.

My friend's Camemjam had camembert erupting unapologetically out the side, but, importantly, it could still be eaten with his hands.

The chips came drizzled with a delicious and tangy homemade sauce and the chunky chicken tenders had a crispy skin that would leave even Colonel Sanders quaking in his boots.

While the burgers come in a fluffy Japanese milk bun as standard, there is a Vegan McVib option and the chefs can also adapt for a dairy allergy by swapping the roll and using vegan cheese.
I will definitely be visiting again and The Bun X will announce its permanent home very soon, which will also be in the Norwich Lanes.
The Bun X is open at The Micawbers Tavern from Wednesday to Saturday.
