Neighbours are becoming increasingly concerned about the safety of children as adults break into an unopened playpark to let youngsters in.

There has been frustration that the park in Overstrand Way, in Sprowston’s newest estate, has remained closed during the summer holidays.

As the early September heatwave approaches it seems those living in the area have grown tired of waiting for a safety inspection.

People living around the park have reported seeing parents breaking in so their children can enjoy the newly-fitted equipment.

Alex Madeley, who lives in the area, said: “Over the last few weeks more work has been done but the metal fencing remains around the site with warning signs not to enter attached.”

Mr Madeley had previously spotted children climbing out of the park and some even rolling under the panels.

She said: “What concerns me is even though the fencing and signage is there – the fixings have now been broken and now adults with young children are using the equipment.

“And I fear that it hasn’t had its final inspection and yet adults are thinking it is safe to break in between the fencing with their young children.

“If it is safe and ready, then get it open, but if it isn’t someone needs to stop people getting in.”

Previously Sprowston town councillor Bill Couzens had said: “We secured a commitment that the play area at Overstrand Way and the playing field behind the school would all be ready and open before the summer holidays.

“The revised opening date for all three areas is now ‘mid-August.”

But the parks remain closed.

A spokesman for Persimmon Homes Anglia said: “Naturally, we would encourage anyone who is currently breaking into the park to stop it immediately. This is unhelpful and only creates further issues.”
