Canaries winger Onel Hernandez will be among Argos fans rejoicing in Norwich as the chain plans a new city centre store.

The new shop is planned to open in the Sainsbury's supermarket in Queens Road as the catalogue retailer continues its move away from standalone stores.

It comes after the company closed its Riverside store last month as it shuts more than 30 stores this year with plans to close 70 more by the end of 2024.

Standalone stores remain in parts of Norfolk, including in Dereham, Fakenham and Cromer.

Argos has submitted a planning application to install related illuminated signs on the existing Sainsbury's store along with a totem sign in the car park.

The chain is already advertising the store as "opening soon" on its website where it says the branch will open from 8am to 10pm from Monday to Friday.

On Saturday the shop will close at 9pm while on Sunday it will open at 10am and shut at 4pm.

Currently, Norwich's nearest Argos branches are at the Sainsbury's in Thorpe St Andrew and Costessey, having previously also had stores in Castle Quarter and in St Stephens Street.

Anyone wishing to comment on the application has until August 25 with hopes a decision will be made by September 20.
