Drivers were left confused in the city centre this morning as a traffic sign was placed in the middle of a lane.

A diverted traffic sign was placed in St Augustines Street, close to the traffic lights for the junction with Magpie Road.

It was in the middle of the left lane on the one-way road, which leads to Aylsham Road, forcing drivers to swerve around it and cause congestion.

One pedestrian walking to work said: “It looks like the work of bored vandals thinking they are funny, they clearly haven’t thought about how dangerous this could be.”

It is thought that some yobbos thought it would be funny to put it in the road to cause trouble.

The sign was originally on the footpath and was for traffic being diverted away from Chartwell Road due to a burst water main in the road which Anglian Water is working on.

Norfolk County Council have said that they are not sure why the sign was in the road, but that they were in talks with Anglian Water to get it moved as soon as possible.
