An unloved graffiti-covered shelter in the heart of Sprowston has been given a new lease of life with designs by young people.

The shelter located on Barkers Field was given to SYEP – a youth engagement project based in the suburb – by the town council.

Clare Lincoln, founder of the project, said: “We knew we wanted to spray paint the shelter, but we wanted the young people to come up with the ideas during a group session, so much of what is on the shelter comes from them.”

The plan was to bring on a Norwich street artist so that the young people could learn more about the art form.

Clare said: “Unfortunately lots of street artists would not help us, they said they do not like doing projects like this one.

“Fortunately for us, someone mentioned Knapple, we met, and she was really positive about the whole idea.

“I got a really good vibe from her, she understands young people, so she was perfect for the job.”

The original idea was that the young people would work with Knapple to paint their own ideas onto the shelter, but with Easter holidays many of them were away – though one young person was there.

But nonetheless, Clare is still really happy, Knapple was able to bring their ideas to life and the young people are very proud.

Clare said: “This has given them the opportunity to do something positive for the community by making the shelter look nicer so that everyone can enjoy them.

“Stuff like this encourages young people to be creative.

“It’s been great, the shelter looks amazing.

“My favourite part is the eyes underneath, I think it really pops and looks so much better than it did.”

Following this revamp SYEP has had many positive comments from the community and they hope to be able to do more work like this.
