Is this the oldest cat in Norwich? And, no, this is not an April Fools' Day joke!

Rosie is far from your average feline friend, as she is approaching her 32nd birthday.

The beloved moggie is now a full-time house cat and lives in Peckover Road, near Eaton Park.

Her owner Lila Brissett adopted Rosie as a kitten from a cat rescue lady in Lakenham because Rosie's first owner found out her daughter was allergic to cats.

"This beautiful thing was handed to me in a cane basket and the rest is history," 71-year-old Lila said.

Rosie's mum was a grey rag doll - which gives Rosie her "bushy squirrel tail" - and her dad is believed to have been a ginger tom.

According to Guinness World Records the oldest living cat is 27, but Lila says when she contacted them last year to see if Rosie was a record breaker she was informed of a 34-year-old cat in Oxford and an American feline in the USA who is 38.

"She's only been to the vet twice in her life," Lila added.

"She's quite a character. She's still got all her teeth.

"She sleeps by the window all day and, like clockwork, she will have some food and use the litter tray.

"There's no need for an alarm clock.

"All she does is eat, sleep, use the litter tray and repeat. I often have to check if she's still alive and breathing.

"I'm worried about the day she crosses over the rainbow bridge. She'll leave a big void."

Lila will throw a birthday party to celebrate Rosie turning 32 on June 1 - although the well-loved puss is already used to receiving birthday cards from neighbours each year.

Although she's tired now, she has a lovely, docile temperament and has lived a long and fulfilled life.

Lila remembers the first winter she had Rosie, where she unsurely navigated her way through the deep snow.

"I'll miss her when she goes," she added. "But I'll never have her put down."
