A carvery fears it will lose out on vital festive trade thanks to major roadworks taking place on a key city route.

Engineers have been carrying out work at the Wroxham Road roundabout and Salhouse Road roundabout over six weeks since the end of October.

Anglian Water also planned to close Salhouse Road for eight days during the county council works to minimise disruption.

But the water company's works have now been delayed until January due to resourcing.

Richard Tooke, general manager for Castle Carvery Racecourse in Salhouse Road, said the roadworks will result in business at the restaurant falling by 25 to 30pc.

Mr Tooke said: "We expect an impact on Christmas trade as it makes it more challenging for people to find their way here.

"The road was constantly getting closed pre-Covid. Since it reopened business has gone up but we are then expecting it to have an adverse effect again.

"It does make a difference. We get a lot of calls from people saying they can't find us.

"If families can't make their way around then they go to other places."

The restaurant does not take bookings in advance and relies on walk-ins.

Anglian Water will be installing a new 4km pipeline in fields using a directional drilling technique.

An Anglian Water spokeswoman said: "The teams due to undertake this work are currently working as quickly as possible to complete a connection we needed to make at one of our Water Treatment Works.

"But there have been unforeseen delays on this project which has meant we have needed to postpone the start dates of this scheme in Norwich."

The county council has confirmed the Anglian Water delay will not have an impact on the highway works.

Most of the work will be carried out at off-peak times.

The NDR and the A1151 Wroxham Road will remain open at all times but traffic will be reduced to one lane.

Fully signed diversions will be in place for both closures.

Fran Whymark, Conservative councillor for Salhouse and Rackheath, said: "The idea was to do the work at the same time.

"But the bottom line with Anglian Water is that they need to make sure the water pipes are up to standard with all the additional housing."
