Christmas celebration music can take many forms, so why not a big band version? This evening with the well-drilled and professional Jonathan Wyatt Big Band took in all kinds of festive music, thoroughly enjoyed by a sell-out audience.

There were cleverly-scored versions of carols which sounded just a bit as if Glenn Miller had arranged them; plus the old favourites, with vocals from Lindsay Ball, Stephen and Paul Amer, the Moonglow Sisters and the newly-formed JWBB Christmas choir. There was also music to catch the ear of the big band fan, notably a romping version of Prokofiev’s Troika.

All in all it was a nicely balanced programme, and there was always a warm rapport between the musicians and the audience in an arena beautifully lit for the occasion.

As a way to get the festivities started this concert truly hit the spot.
