The Jane Austen College student's portrait of the former politician - who famously resigned as junior health minister in 1988 during the salmonella in eggs controversy - was among 120 entries submitted by sixth form and college students from across the region.

Second prize went to Ethan Moffet, from Springwood High School, and third prize went to Megan Lansdell, from Wymondham High Academy. Seb Green from Norwich School, Ethan Guttridge from Hewitt Academy, and Abi Evans from Wymondham High Academy were highly commended.

Fifty-one entries - ranging from fashion to fine art and digital design - were shortlisted in the competition. They will be displayed at north Norfolk's Holkham Hall from July to August 29, and then at Great Yarmouth Library from September 4 to 6.

Professor John Last, vice-chancellor of Norwich University of the Arts, said: 'This competition celebrates the creativity of the next generation of artists, makers and creators in East Anglia.

'We've been struck by both the high standard of work this year and the range of ideas, formats and media students have used.

'I'd like to congratulate the winners, but all of the shortlisted entrants and their schools and colleges can be proud of the work that will be on show in Holkham this summer and Great Yarmouth in September.'

The Norfolk Art and Design competition 2018 was organised by Norwich University of the Arts, Lou Chapman from Dereham Sixth Form College and Ally Hadden from Reepham High School.
