This walk from Richard and Sally Parker starts from the grassed area in front of Suffield Church by the village sign. The sprawling village of Suffield lies between Aylsham and North Walsham.

SUFFIELD AND FELMINGHAM

Distance: 6 miles

Public Transport: Buses run from Norwich to Felmingham

The remote St Margaret's Church is a pretty flint building with an interesting rood screen. In contrast the imposing St Andrew's Church, Felmingham, re-built in the 1740s, is in the centre of the village.

The walk makes its way down quiet country lanes, footpaths and tracks, through heathland and over water meadows. It passes by a Community Woodland, which is worth a look round if time permits.

If the bus is used to get to the walk, get off at Cucumber Corner, Felmingham, and start from where the route passes nearby.

? Leave the church, which overlooks a junction of lanes, and head south towards Elm Farm and Felmingham, keeping ahead at the next junction. Just before the first bungalow on the left, turn left at a finger post and follow the footpath beside the field to reach the lane at the far end. Turn right along the lane and follow it to a T junction. Turn left and follow the lane over Suffield Beck and past lanes off to the left and the right.

? Go past Oak Farm and cottage to reach a finger post pointing off to the left. Turn left and follow the path, which goes up the hill and heads towards a hedge corner on the far side of the field. Follow the footpath beside this hedge until it comes out onto Aylsham Road (B1145) by the Felmingham village sign. Turn left and proceed along the road with caution to reach the junction with Church Road. Just over to the right is St Andrew's Church, Felmingham.

? There is a footpath straight ahead beside the black and white chevron bend sign. Take this footpath alongside the hedge and through open fields to a crossing track. Turn left here and then quickly right into the joining track. Soon after passing Heath Farm the track enters woodland: this is the beginning of Bryant's Heath. At the marker post, veer off diagonally left, passing a BMX cycle track on the right.

? Go up the hill and keep to the left following the edge of the heath with a paddock on the left. Where the path comes to a bend on a track, follow this track keeping the paddocks to the left. Continue down the track, which becomes metalled (Heath Road), to its junction with the North Walsham Road (B1145). Cross over the road and turn right to reach Cucumber Corner.

? At the corner where the main road turns right, continue straight ahead into the signposted public bridleway. After passing Rugg's Hall Cottages, turn left down a track to reach a lane. Turn left here and, soon after passing a track going off to the left to Aylsham Road Farm, turn right at a finger post on the right. Take the path across the field, heading towards the hedge corner. Follow the path as it passes through a gate and then angles to the right across a water meadow, crossing wooden bridges over dykes, to reach the two gates in the corner of the meadow.

? Pass through the gates and head on in the direction of the only stile on the walk. Climb the stile and continue across the fields to reach a lane. Turn left along the lane to the T junction, passing the entrance to the Community Woodland on the right. Turn right at the junction and follow the lane round a left corner. Continue to the next T junction. Turn right and proceed back to Suffield Church.

JOIN THE RAMBLERS

The Ramblers is Britain's walking charity which has been working to encourage more people to take up walking and to safeguard footpaths and the countryside for 75 years. Whether you're an old hand or a complete beginner, the organisation can help you get the best out of walking through its network of local groups.

The Norwich Group has been established for more than 35 years and was the first group in the Norfolk Area of the Ramblers Association. Non-members are welcome to join all walks in national festivals and some special events and programmes. Most regular walks are intended for Ramblers members, but you are welcome to attend two or three walks on a try-out basis.
