Which Human League do you know best? The electronic music pioneers who emerged four decades ago amid the industrial soundscapes of 1970s Sheffield, or the 1980s synth-pop pioneering chart-toppers?

Both were on display during an eclectic, but enthralling headline set at Let’s Rock.

From earliest hit Being Boiled, back from when the day’s when they were an all-male group of electronic experimenters, through to the hits like Love Action.

Taking to the stage wearing a sleeveless leather smock and small round shades that made him look like he had just stepped out of The Matrix, Phil Oakey is clearly still willing to push the boundaries.

Singers Susan Ann Sulley and Joanne Catterall, who joined the band in time for their chart-topping album Dare, add poise and glamour, regularly disappearing to change costumes.

With three backing musicians and some surreal stage projection images, it was a performance to reminded you just how many well known tunes they have.

None more so than Don’t You Want Me, which guaranteed a crowd word-for-word sing-a-long. Before a belated encore that finished with the tune that perhaps best encompasses the two sides of The Human League: Electric Dreams.
