How to have a go at Winter Olympics sports in East Anglia

Skiing

Whether you are an absolute beginner or want advanced race training, the Norfolk Snowsports Club in Trowse, Norwich, and the Suffolk Ski and Leisure Park, in Ipswich, have sessions for you. norfolksnowsports.com suffolkskicentre.co.uk

Boarding

Again, learn to board, or perfect your alley-oops, at the Norfolk Snowsports Club in Trowse, Norwich, and the Suffolk Ski and Leisure Park in Ipswich.

Ice skating - Riverside Ice and Leisure in Chelmsford and Planet Ice at Peterborough are open daily and offer lessons.

Ice skating the traditional way

When winters were colder people regularly skated on the shallow water flooding across the frozen Fens. Today fen skaters still hope, each winter, for perfect skating conditions in places like Welney Wash on the Norfolk-Cambridgeshire border. Sledging

You might not hit the speeds seen in the mountains of South Korea if you are sledging in the lowlands of East Anglia, but when it snows most families have plenty of fun at their own favourite sledging hills - from Mousehold Heath near Norwich to Christchurch Park in Ipswich and The Walks in King's Lynn to the dip near the West Suffolk College in Bury St Edmunds.

Husky racing

It's not an Olympic sport, but it's got a very wintry feel, is super-speedy and exciting, and takes place in King's East Forest, Barton Mills, near Thetford (next rally March 3-4 siberianhuskyclub.org.uk)and Rendlesham Forest, near Woodbridge, (next races March 3-4, including a fun day on the Sunday huskyracing.org.uk)

Tubing or ringos

Again, not an official Olympic sport. Yet. It combines aspects of the toboggan, skeleton and bobsleigh disciplines with mountains of fun. The Suffolk Ski Centre calls it ringos and the Norfolk Snowsports Club say tubing is one of the fastest growing winter sports and just about anyone from four upwards can have a go, with no lessons needed, at sitting in a tyre-like rubber tube and zooming down the slopes.

Skateboarding

It's not a million mountains removed from snowboarding. So if you can't get to the slopes then try your local skatepark.

Rollerskating

It's not a million rinks removed from ice skating. So if you can't get to the slopes then try your local roller rink, which include Funkys in Norwich, Area 25 Skatepark in Ipswich, Retroskate in Yarmouth, CurveMotion in Bury St Edmunds and Rollers at Lowestoft's Claremont Pier. Skate Norfolk is a not-for-profit group running rollerskating sessions for children in Norwich, Thetford and Drayton, to help them develop skills and fitness. skatenorfolk.co.uk

Curling.

The only dedicated curling rink in England is in Kent, but there are similarities with bowls or even beach boules, and there is no shortage of beach space in East Anglia at this time of the year.
