It may normally be home to model boats but mermaids, monsters and crocodiles are set to take over a Norwich boating lake.

The boating lake at Eaton Park in South Park Avenue will be the setting of Fish, an outdoor theatre production, as part of the Norwich and Norfolk Festival tonight and tomorrow.

Produced by Cambridge-based Gomito Productions, the play tells the story of a flood which covers the whole globe and leads to strange goings-on.

As part of the production, actors will be in the lake and manipulating puppets that float on the water.

Amelia Bird, artistic director, said: “There will be fish, crocodiles, monsters and mermaids and the play itself is about this flood that covers the whole world and weird, magical and wonderful things happen.”

The 45-minute free performance, held at 8pm as the sun sets, is inspired by the Vietnamese art of water puppetry.

It is the first time Gomito Productions, which has earned an enviable reputation for creating new, visual theatre, has been part of the Norwich and Norfolk Festival.

Ms Bird added: “It's brilliant to be part of the festival. The quality and standard of the programming is so high that it's amazing to be part of that and to be part of event with such amazing outdoor theatre companies and dance companies.”

People are being invited to bring a picnic and blanket and to wrap up warm for the show.

Gomito is an associate company of The Junction in Cambridge.

Fish is supported by Escalator Outdoor Arts and The Arts Council England.
