The autumn tour will follow a busy summer of live shows for the Birmingham band, which will see them support The Cure at their huge BST Hyde Park show on July 7 and play festivals including Manchester’s Neighbourhood Festival and the Werchter Classic.

Violence is the band’s sixth album and follows 2015’s acclaimed In Dream. It has been produced by Leo Abrahams, who has previously worked with the likes of Wild Beasts, Florence & The Machine and Frightened Rabbit.

“It’s a lonely life, a long and lonely life,” sings frontman Tom Smith on Cold, the opening track, which marks the return of the perennial doom-mongers.

It’s a synth-heavy trip which explores new territory, their most adventurous since 2009’s In This Light And On This Evening. Follow-up track Hallelujah pushes acoustic riffs against the crunch of brutal electronics while the title track has more fire and fury than Donald Trump’s White House.

The beautiful No Sound But The Wind finds its way on to a studio album almost 10 years after it was first released. Whiel the album was precded by the track Magazine, which has been around since the recording of the band’s fourth album, The Weight Of Your Love in 2011, which saw original guitarist Chris Urbanowicz depart.

• Editors play the UEA LCR, Norwich, on October 22, 7.30pm, £25, 01603 508050, ueaticketbookings.co.uk
