One is a boxer and the other a singer, but two brothers will take part in the Starlight Walk to raise cash for cancer support.

Singer Simon Curtis, 41, will also be singing to the expected 1,000 entrants to raise spirits before the walk starts at midnight.

Mr Curtis, from Loddon, and his brother Earl Ling, 38, are to complete the 13-mile walk in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support in memory of a mutual friend who died on Good Friday last year.

Percy Summers had lived next door to the pair when they first moved to the city as a child and had been an important figure to them both.

Mr Curtis said that it was this that had spurred them on to enter the event on June 18.

'I've known him since I was eight years old and I had my first job with him and grew up with him,' he said.

'He got Earl his first job as well. We worked for him on a building site.'

Mr Curtis, who also lost his father-in-law to cancer within a week of Mr Summers' death, said that Macmillan had been extremely helpful at the time.

'I think they're fantastic,' he said.

'They were very good. They even helped my mother-in-law with benefits and what she could get help with.'

Mr Curtis will entertain the crowds from 10.30 to 11.30pm, before a group warm-up is done to get everyone ready for the long hike.

CDs featuring Mr Curtis will also be on sale on the night and all proceeds will also be donated to Macmillan. He hopes to raise at least 1,000 for the charity.

Mr Ling, who lives on Hooper Lane off Sprowston Road, has said that after a long career in boxing which saw him win an impressive six bouts, he still believes he has a shot at the British title.

However he is also working hard on pursuing his acting career, having starred alongside Danny Dyer in the film Two Guns Tony.
