A Norwich band has been selected over thousands of other unsigned acts in a national competition.

Alternative rock band Avosetta has made it through to the last 20 acts from 2,500 in the Evo Music Rooms competition.

Norwich musicians Sam Gibbons, 21, Ben Morris, 20, Jack Burden, 20, Jay Rutterford, 22, and Will Askew, 19, formed Avosetta in March 2008 after being in other separate projects. They have been working hard ever since with the intention to make it big, and hope this competition will turn them into stars.

The band has had good reviews including 8/10 in February's edition of Rocksound magazine.

Guitarist Jack Burden said they were “all so excited to be in the last 20 bands”.

He added: “We are confident about our music and feel we deserve to be where we are, however it is another thing having industry professionals agreeing. This competition is an amazing opportunity and just what an unsigned act like us and the other bands need. Thank you to anyone who may have voted for us and please keep them coming.”

Winning this competition would provide Avosetta with the chance to have one-to-one mentoring from some of the UK's biggest names and have access to a fully equipped recording studio where they can lay down up to three singles. They will also be able to perform live on Channel Four's Evo Music Rooms, hosted by Zane Lowe, with three major artists.

To get through to the final they need to be voted as one of the top ten acts by the public. If they make into the top ten, they could be one of the six winning acts chosen by the judges to go to the studio and perform live on Channel Four.

The judges who selected the acts to go through to public voting were artist manager Jason Knight, DJ Ross Allen, UK music director of Myspace Matias Lorenz and DJ Tosh Darg. The same judges will choose the winning six acts.

Avosetta are the only Norfolk based act which made it to the top twenty in this competition.

t You can vote for them online at www.evomusicrooms.co.uk/the-polling-booth/avosetta.

t Voting closes on March 10.
