Archant

We tasted eight supermarket mince pies to see which are the best in 2017.

What makes a good mince pie? For Emma and myself it’s a good, short, crumbly pastry, and a deep filling, rich with booze, fruit and spice. We road tested eight pies – each of them quite different.

10/10

M&S 6 Mince Pies

We both thought these were scrummy. They had a pretty, homemade look, and the pastry was buttery and crisp with a generous amount of filling. The box promised vine fruits, cherries, brandy and clementines and the end result certainly delivered, with a ripe, juicy, definitive orange flavour coming through. They weren’t claggy either.

8/10

Waitrose 4 All-Butter Chocolate and Ginger Mince Pies

These divided opinion. They looked a little in style like pork pies and Emma didn’t feel the flavour was anything like a mince pie (if you were being blindfold tested). However I quite like the cocoa hit from the pastry and the tangy orange filling, which reminded me of a Terry’s Chocolate Orange. There could have been a bit more spice from the ginger, but I think these would appeal to people who don’t usually like mince pies – or even kids.

7/10

Aldi Specially Selected 6 Cognac Steeped Mince Pies

A very decent attempt. They looked nice, and had a defined, non-gloopy filling. The booze was there, but not too overpowering. And the pastry had been nicely made.

7/10

Co-operative Truly Irresistible 6 Luxury All-Butter Mince Pies

These were very much on par with the Aldi pies. Good crisp pastry, lovely finishing details and a decent filling that would please most mince pie eaters.

6/10

Asda Extra Special 6 Luxury All-Butter Mince Pies

The filling on these was a bit gloopy and overly spiced, and the boozy hit not quite what we expected, but the pastry was good.

7/10

Tesco Finest 6 All-Butter Pastry Deep Filled Mince Pies

A fruity pie but again, a little too overspiced. There were decent pieces of fruit though and the pastry was some of the best we tried, offering a crunchy, short contrast to the middle.

5/10

East of England Co-op 6 Sourced Locally Mince Pies

These really weren’t our favourite and reminded Emma more of a type of Eccles cake. The pastry was very thick (which I know some people really like) but had a decent texture. And the filling was a bit mean – there was so little of it you could barely taste it. The best thing to do with these is to serve them warm with a big dollop of cream.

5/10

Lidl Deluxe 6 Luxury Mince Pies

Beyond the pastry, which was good, the filling in these pies was much, much too thick and gummy, almost like overset jelly which was a shame as the flavour was OK. We imagine warm they’d be easier to eat, but there were no discernable pieces of fruit.
