It has been just over 50 years since a legal drink-drive limit was set in this country.

But families are still being torn apart because some drivers think it is OK to get behind the wheel after drinking too much alcohol.

The risks are huge – prison, injury, death. There is no reward.

But despite the constant warnings and obvious dangers, the proportion of motorists drinking and driving in Norfolk has increased.

One in 12 of those stopped and tested by Norfolk Police during the force’s Christmas drink-drive campaign failed roadside breath tests.

Each Christmas police make extra efforts to catch drink-drivers and those caught are also named in the pages of this newspaper, but for some it is still acceptable.

Fifty years on, there is work to do to get the dangers of drink-driving through to everyone.
