Archant

There has rightly been concern of the gender pay gap at the BBC - but I believe there is a more concerning discrepancy which so far has not been highlighted.

Both the highest earning men and women are in, shall we say “more serious roles” and those in jobs of a more cerebral nature, are not so richly rewarded.

One simple example should serve to make the point.

The BBC’s chief political editor earns less than half of that of a joint presenter of a popular light entertainment show.

This same discrepancy is of course also present in the wider world where doctors, nurses and teachers, however good they are, receive far lower incomes than those in sport or entertainment.

Perhaps society might be energised by the BBC’s revelations to examine its priorities and lead to a modicum of true worth and fairness.

We shouldn’t all have to be like Chris Evans to be richly rewarded.
