Having just read the flat rejection to the Primark proposal, I have to say, I think the Norwich Society do not really seem to have the best interests of the city at heart.
Primark, whether you like it or hate it, must be one of the busiest shops in the city. As an ex-pat, who visits every few months, I have observed the city gradually fading away.
While there are amazing places, and award-winning shopping, the Haymarket is on its way out. Any plans to rejuvenate, or improve footfall should be embraced. Instead, they are rejected for being ugly, and insensitive to the character of the street.
I'm sorry, but empty buildings are ugly. Blocked out windows are ugly. Walking through Norwich now, with friends I find myself saying 'this used to be HMV', 'that used to be a restaurant'.
They should be thankful that Primark want to invest in the area, rather than disappearing to Chapelfield, or another city completely. The area is a great spot, and any investment should be encouraged. To reject this proposal, that would undoubtedly improve the local economy, because of the way it looks, is farcical.
