Archant

Oversized blazers and ankle-grazing trousers feature in most autumn collections on the high street as fashion mans up for the new season, says Emma Harrowing.

For the past few autumn and winter seasons the trouser suit has become king. Cigarette pants and slim-cut blazers hit the high street last year and the tuxedo became the alternative to the little black dress once again in the Christmas collections.

Women were doing it for themselves in a suit traditionally designed for men. They stamped their femininity on their look with a lace camisole under their jacket or a statement necklace to soften the sharp lines of the tailoring.

For the 2012 suit femininity is still on holiday with pretty pastels and peep-toe wedges as women wear trouser suits as they were intended with no frills, just plain and straightforward – man style.

It makes for a refreshing change. Men’s style is simple and yet looks put together and stylish. They just have to pull on a pair of trousers, a shirt and jacket and wear with brogues and a matching man-bag and they are ready to go. Simplicity speaks volumes. I’ve always been a bit jealous.

Now this green haze is lifting as women can steal this style verbatim. A tailored suit worn with a buttoned up shirt, leather brogues or loafers looks cool not geeky. I might even go the whole hog and put on a tie – or there is a gold coloured statement necklace in the Freedom collection at Topshop that is the shape and size of a tie which will get me back in touch with my feminine side without looking too girly. Mr T loved his bling after all and he’s definitely got some nuts.
