There are some crimes that seem particularly callous in nature. And the theft of two Books of Remembrance from a Norwich crematorium falls firmly within that category.

The books contain thousands of messages to parents, children, siblings and friends who have died, often written by loved ones in a time of great anguish.

They are a permanent memorial to that person - and often a place that relatives can visit to pay their respects.

Removing them from the crematorium is unthinkable.

It will cause thousands of families distress, at a time of year when missing a loved one is all the more difficult.

We urge whoever took the books to get in touch with police - they have no value to you.

And for some families, those messages mean everything.
