Norfolk clubs had a mixed bag of results in the first round of the Norfolk and Suffolk Veterans' League Cup.

First Division Norwich club Griffin accounted for Beccles Caxton 6-2 away thanks to Jason Ladbrooke’s four goals and an Ian Whalebelly brace.

Caister lost interest early on when they suffered a 2-0 home defeat to First Division side Sole Bay United with goals from Chris Baggott and Chris Day.

Division Three side Harleston OB also went at the first hurdle when they lost 4-1 at home to Premier Division leaders Woodbridge Town, with Paul Moss netting their consolation.

The all-Yarmouth local derby went the way of the hosts Kings Arms Crusaders who defeated Gt Yarmouth Postals at the Beaconsfield 3-2 on penalties after the scores were level at 3-3 after extra-time. Roger Middleton with a double and Chris Larner found the net for the Postmen.

Kings Head Loddon from Division Two had a comfortable home win by three clear goals against Cromer Crab who play in a division below them. On target were Adrian Battisson, Colin Forder and David Lees.

First Division Mulbarton beat Poringland Wanderers from Division Four by 3-1 with a Carl Cooper double and one from Dean Parfitt. Norton Athletic beat Heils Bakery Crusaders 4-2 with Danny Hoadley netting twice with one apiece from Steve Smith and Barry Tipple.

Newcomers Long Stratton went down to Premier Division visitors Kirkley & Pakefield by 7-2. On target for Kirkley were George Millington and Johnny Williams with hat-tricks and one from Paul Taylor. Mid-Norfolk side Scole United came through their home tie with St Clements Hospital but only after a penalty shoot-out after the teams were locked at two each after extra-time. Mark Noble and Graham Ruddock netted for the Division Two hosts.

Premier Division Norwich Trafford, who were beaten finalists last season, had no trouble against The Unthank Arms also based in the City. Scorers in their 7-0 away success were Josh Barzey (3), Lee Roberts (2), Steve Mills and Carl Musgrove.

In the first Premier Division games of the season Bungay came back from a 3-1 deficit at home to newly-promoted Bury Town. Strikes from Andy Filkins, Micky Logan and Eddie Payne had given the visitors a healthy lead but a double from John Nobbs and a last-gasp equaliser from Stuart Catchpole gave the relieved Black Dogs a share of the spoils. After a sluggish start Norwich Trafford found themselves a goal down at Kirkley & Pakefield following a Darren Osborne strike. They pulled their socks up after the interval and deservedly levelled matters with a Scott Ampleford tap-in and had several opportunities after that to take all three points. In Division One (North) Aylsham Black Boys beat Corton Seltic by the odd goal of three with Darren Nichols and an own goal settling matters. Carl Bagshaw netted for the visitors. Mulbarton left Walmer Road with a heavy defeat going down by 5-2 against Kirkley & Pakefield’s second string. The hosts goals were shared between Steve Bacon, Neil Dale, Nik Johnson, Darren Sampson and Stuart Turner. Mike Flowers and Carl Cooper replied the visitors. Kings Head Loddon and Scole United had Division Two (North) 4-2 home wins against Martham and Beccles Caxton respectively. On target for Loddon were Adrian Battisson with a double and one each from Micky Broxup and Colin Forder. Two from Dale Barrett and one apiece from Paul Chenery and David Williams was enough for Scole with Mark Taylor netting both for Caxton. New boy Darren Hunter notched all three for Cromer Crab against NALGO Old Boys at Easton College in Division Three (North). In Division Four (North) Poringland Wanderers beat Norwich new boys Unthank Arms 4-2.
