Fashion gets inspiration from all things British this winter as checks, plaid, khaki and leather take centre stage. By EMMA HARROWING.

When the quilted Barbour jacket was worn by model Kate Moss in the summer, the traditional cover-up usually worn by countryside folk became one of the must-have items of 2011.

And it is not just the quilted jacket that has become a fashion staple for winter. The tweed blazer, the parka and the ubiquitous check shirt have come together to form a capsule wardrobe for the heritage trend that sees fashion moving back to its British roots.

Bring the look to the city by layering checks with camel, khaki or tweed and accessorise with faux fur.

For men take a trip back to the 1990s but give the grunge look a more uniform feel with blasted wash jeans or chinos, a checked shirt, tailored tweed jacket and a waxed faux fur hat.

For women the look is more country meets the city with a check cape worn over skinny jeans with a suede wedge heel boot with faux fur trim.

The look can be dressed up or down for a stylish shopping trip or for a winter walk in the countryside. It’s the perfect look for winter.
