Vintage is well and truly on the fashion map with the 50s, 60s and 70s influencing this season's trends. So can you wear the 50s midi skirt or 60s mini? Or would a pair of flared trousers and a floaty blouse be more flattering? Emma Harrowing shows you which look best suits your body shape.

50s

The style

The 50s look is ideal if your top and bottom half are the same size and you have a defined waist as clinched in waists and full mid-length skirts are key to this style. The 50s brought femininity back into fashion in the 50s when fashion designer Dior created the elegant prom style dress. This was also the decade when Coco Chanel designed the classic Chanel suit which featured a collarless jacket and just below the knee length skirt.

You can get this look today with a midi skirt worn with a pussy bow blouse, a camel coat and high heeled loafers.

Emily wears: Doris Day dress made in a vintage 50s fabric, 95, Poppy Valentine in the Royal Arcade; 50s shoes, 20 and 50s clutch bag, 30, both Prim on St Benedict's.

Emily wears: 50s olive wool dress, 55; leather gloves, 10; 50s shoes, 20 and 50s clutch bag, 30, all from Prim on St Benedict's.

60s

The style

Mini skirts and dresses, thigh high boots and psychedelic prints were all the rage in the swinging 60s. The 60s style is ideal if you have a straight body shape, you have long legs or you have a small bust as the look is all about showing off your legs but wearing a high neck top.

You can get this look today with a pleated tartan mini skirt, polo neck jumper, faux fur cape and thigh high boots.

Charlotte wears: 60s stripy day dress, 28; skinny belt, 3; 60s bag, 6; blue court shoes, 6; blue earrings, 3; all from Retreat Vintage on Magdalen Street.

Charlotte wears: 60s wool dress; 45; tan thigh high boots, 99 and 60s faux fur cape, 65, all from Vintage Deli in Burnham Market or www.vintagedeli.co.uk

70s

The style

If you are top heavy or pear shape the 70s look is for you as flared jeans or trousers will balance out your hips and top half, and scooped neck or low cut smock style dresses will flatter a larger bust.

At the moment the 70s style is limited to accessories such as tan belts, satchel style bags and chunky lace up boots, but come summer the 70s is tipped to be the style for 2011. So why not get on board with the trend early.

Louise wears: 70s blue dress, 22; black platform boots, 20; bangles, 4 - 5 each; original Cartier bag, 300, all from Retreat Vintage on Magdalen Street.

Louise wears: 70s velvet dungarees, 79 and 70s stripy blouse, 22, Vintage Deli in Burnham Market or www.vintagedeli.co.uk; suede ankle boots, from a selection at Imelda's on Guildhall Hill.

Fashion fix

Men if you are looking for a new suit think the Mod look as this season the suit goes back to the slim fit style. Look out for skinny trousers and a jacket that is more bony than boxy, and remember to keep those lapels as small as possible. Life Matters loves this grey herringbone twill suit, 175 from Topman.

New Look in The Mall has just has a bit of a revamp and so has its clothes with many new additions in store. Life Matters loves this Limited beaded shift dress (85) which will be perfect for Christmas and New Year parties and for dressing down with a pair of leggings and a cardy; these tan shorts (19.99) which can be worn with this season's opaque or lace tights and this dark grey cape which is the perfect statement coat.

Ankle boots are the top footwear choice this season for men and women so there are many different styles in the shops. Life Matters loves these three boots for men. If you like your vintage style these brown brogue boots (65) are ideal. If you like this season's trend for ankle skimming turn-up jeans these Ben Sherman desert boots (60) will give you a laid back style. For men who have a classic style and like this autumn's urban country trend these mast two-tone boat boots (65) will take you through autumn and winter with style. All three boots are available from Topman.
