It was nice to read the lovely tributes to recently deceased football manager Graham Taylor and thought I would share a Norfolk connection to this man's immense kindness.

In 1997 I was playing pub football in Norwich for The Marlpit but injuries led to me hanging up my boots. It was a wrench to give up. That summer I saw Watford, my team, were playing a friendly at Fakenham Town.

Being the cheeky chappie I am, I wrote to Mr Taylor to see if I could come on as sub for the last 20 seconds to finish my career in a Watford first team match. No chance?
He did better than that. He let me come on as sub for the last 20 minutes to fulfil my dream. He didn’t have to do it. He did it because he liked making fans, people happy.
I will be eternally grateful to Mr Taylor, and will miss him greatly. A kind man.
