The Ramblers

A free festival of winter walks, from December 23 to January 7, has been put together by the Ramblers. Here are 10 to try in Norfolk and Suffolk.

1 Boxing Day Mince Pie Walk. Meet in Pakenham church car park at 10am for a leisurely 4.5 mile circular walk through picturesque Thurston,

Join the Bury-St-Edmunds Ramblers for a Boxing Day breath of fresh air and a mince pie or two.

2 A quiet stroll. Meet at Glemsford Village Hall at 10.30am on Wednesday, December 27 to join the Sudbury Ramblers on a

five mile leisurely wander around the village, followed by coffee and cakes.

3 Walk part of Marriotts Way from Aylsham with Norwich Ramblers on Thursday December 28. The short circular walk, of just 3.7 miles begins at the Bure Valley Railway car park at 1.30pm.

4 An isolated castle is one of the star attractions of the five mile Bodham and Baconsthorpe Castle walk, beginning at the Red Hart pub in Bodham at 10.30am on Thursday, December 28. It is led by the Wensum group.

5 Get 2018 off to a healthy start with a New Year’s Day walk. Meet at the car park by Rougham primary school at 10am for a leisurely four mile walk with Bury St Edmunds Ramblers.

6 Enjoy a bit of a work-out around Old Buckenham with the Breckland Brisk Walkers group on New Year’s Day. Its three mile farm walk begins at 10.30am at Old Buckenham church.

7 Start at Ludham Church car park at 10am on Tuesday January 2 for a leisurely five mile walk with Great Yarmouth Ramblers.

8 A stroll through Piper’s Vale, Orwell Country Park and Brazier’s Wood. Join Ipswich Ramblers for a four mile walk, meeting at the Landseer Park car park on Saturday January 6 at 10am.

10 Enjoy a short, picturesque walk from Sheringham to Beeston Bump at your leisure. It’s less than three miles and but includes stunning views and there’s even some Second World War history at the summit. All these walks are part of the free Festival of Winter Walks which runs from Saturday, December 23 to Sunday, January 7. The annual festival is put together by the Ramblers, which has walking groups across the country – including lots in lovely East Anglia. Ramblers walks range from short strolls to longer workouts.
