The Norfolk and Norwich art circle brings together talented artists in our region. Derek James reports.

If you love Norfolk in all its glory then you will love a popular art exhibition which opened yesterday at The Hostry in Norwich Cathedral.

So many people look forward to the annual show staged by talented members of the Norfolk and Norwich Art Circle.

The city and county has produced some great artists over the years and continues to do so. This region has always attracted and inspired painters and sculptors – and still does.

The art circle can be traced back to 1885, and past members have included such distinguished names as Seago, Munnings and Arnesby Brown.

Today, a new generation of artists, amateur and professional, carry on the fine tradition of producing works of art which give such pleasure to others.

At the new exhibition there are eloquent watercolours by David Talks featuring Cromer, Reedham and Morston. Several painters feature Norwich views from Gas Hill and Swan Lane. There are works by Paul Cozens, Rod Moore and Norman Sidebottom.

The visitor will take a journey around much of Norfolk and then into Suffolk and across the country before heading 5,000 feet up the Yukon.

Still life and portraits are featured in works by Geoffrey Burrows, Keith Johnson, Edelgard Hayward, Nick Sabberton and Liz Balkwell.

There are also some inspirational and thought-provoking works by Jane Hodgson, Janice Gordon and Jenni Wain-Potter.

'This is definitely an exhibition for those who love to see our local area portrayed in a realistic and sensitive manner, offering work from more than 50 of the group members,' said art circle member Richard Motley.

'The paintings and sculpture are pleasing and decorative, brightening the mood in times that are economically challenging,' he added.

So why not go along and have a look for yourself.

The Norfolk and Norwich Art Circle Exhibition runs at The Hostry at Norwich Cathedral until Saturday August 21.
