Derek James reports on the restoration of a holiday favourite

Hi-Di-Hi and all aboard for a trainload of memories on the dear little Noddy express at Pontin’s when the sun was shining on the troubled holiday camp empire.

At the old Hemsby park years ago Noddy and his train ferried the holidaymakers around the site and how the children loved him.

He was a star attraction then...and now he is again.

The Noddy train has been saved from the scrapheap, restored to its former glory and the owner, who lives in County Durham, would love to hear from you if you have any memories, photographs or postcards of the train in its heyday at happy Hemsby.

No wonder Trevor Alexander is as proud as punch of Noddy who is now a hit at tractor shows around the country.

“If any of your readers can help in any way, I would really like to hear from them,” said Trevor.

Last month I told you how Trevor had been renovating Noddy and this is the end result - doesn’t he look magnificent?

And he is a symbol of bygone days when a week or so at a holiday camp was a real family treat.

Beneath the train body is a Ferguson tractor and that is what powers Noddy.

It was in the early 1970s when Pontins came up with the idea of buying up a dozen Ferguson farm tractors to be converted into Noddy trains at their camps across the country.

They were fitted out at Chichester and then KPO – that’s his number – worked at Brean Sands before arriving at Hemsby where he was in the 1970s and 80s.

Noddy was eventually sold to the Round Table in Chichester and was later abandoned before being restored by Trevor who would now love to to be able to buy the carriages to complete the package.

“It is lovely to see the reaction we get when we take Noddy around the tractor shows,” added Trevor.
