From the editor: Rubbish and overflowing bins were a blight on Norwich

Hopefully if you are a regular reader of this column you'll know there is lots that I'm proud of about our city.
It’s a wonderful place to live, superb for families and I hope to be here for many years to come.
However, walking through the city centre recently I’m afraid those feelings disappeared and I had cause to feel embarrassed about the place I live and normally love.
It was while on the way to the train station on a Saturday afternoon for a trip down to London that my hackles we’re raised.
Walking along Prince of Wales Road I must have spotted at least 20 bin bags dumped at various points. Many of them were open, rubbish either pouring out or already strewn across the road or paths. I also counted about half a dozen street bins either full or also over-flowing. The place looked an absolute mess.
Now I know Prince of Wales Road has its problems, especially during the late hours of the night and early hours of the morning.
But surely that doesn’t mean we should give up on it for the rest of the time?
For those who arrive by train, Prince of Wales Road is the gateway to the city, but if I had come here for the first time and that was the sight that welcomed me, I think I’d turn back around and head home.
After boarding the train I couldn’t help but vent my anger on social media and it was surprising just how many people either agreed, had seen the problem themselves or even reported it as being an issue elsewhere in the city centre.
It could be this is an issue caused by council cuts – or a problem with not having staff to clear up on Saturday mornings.
However, I’d implore Norwich City Council to take a look and see if there’s more they could be doing.
It would also be nice to think some of those businesses along the road might show a bit of civic pride and take more care when sorting out their mess from the night before.
It is, after all, in all of our interests to want to encourage people to keep coming back to this fine city.
