It's that time of year when many of us will at some point sit back and reflect on the year that's just passed, the positives, the negatives, the good times and the bad.

With that in mind I thought I’d use this column to try to honestly reflect on the service this newspaper and its website is providing to you the dear reader.

To do that I’m going to go back to May, when I was honoured to have been appointed to my first editor role and outlined my early plans.

In that column I asked ‘what makes a good newspaper and website?’ and outlined what I saw as some of the key factors. They included:

• A jam-packed news agenda

• Insightful analysis, opinion and reaction to the issues affecting people’s day-to-day lives

• Good pictures and stories about the people who make this city tick.

• Quirky news items and features that provide a glimpse into a Norwich few of us knew existed.

• Competitions and money-off coupons

• Brilliant sport reporting

It’s fair to say that some of these we do very well and some we could do better.

I’m fiercely proud of the news and sport our team delivers day in day out, but also aware that we must not rest on our laurels.

In that same column I urged readers to do their bit to tell me where they thought we were going right or wrong and subsequently received some really thought-provoking ideas.

That experience made me realise how equally passionate many of you are about your Norwich Evening News and I hope that continues for many years to come.

This is, after all, your newspaper and I am just its guardian.

It’s for that reason I echo that appeal. Get in touch, tell me what you’d like to see changed and I’ll see what we can do.

No idea or opinion is ever a bad one.

In next week’s column I’ll talk about some of our early plans and priorities for 2017.

In the meantime I wish you a very merry Christmas and thank you for your continued support.
