A Norwich man will be climbing the highest mountain in the British Isles in a bid to raise £10,000 to help injured military personnel.

Craig King, 40, from Peverell Road in Bowthorpe, will be climbing Ben Nevis in August with an ex-soldier from Sheffield who he met through a Facebook campaign.

The pair hope to raise £10,000 for Headley Court, the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre (DMRC) in Surrey, so the centre can buy specialist equipment.

Mr King, who has several friends in the armed forces and volunteers as an administrator for the Armed Forces Unite group, which helps keeps soldiers from across the world in touch with each other, said he also hopes to raise awareness of the problems injured soldiers face.

The father-of-four said: “I cannot think of any better charity than one which helps soldiers who have been injured while fighting for their country.

“I think it's going to kill me but I really want to do it. I can't afford gym membership and I live in flat Norfolk, so training has been a bit difficult, but I've been doing some jogging and things to try and make sure I'm fit enough.

“I know £10,000 sounds like a lot, but it's not a great deal in terms of what it can buy. If everyone just sponsors me £1 we will be able to raise that much money.

“I'm also looking for bigger sponsors in the form of businesses or organisations. We are already planning next year's event too, which is going to be even better than climbing Britain's biggest mountain.”

Mr King, who is a full-time father, climbed Snowdon last year to raise money for the Help for Heroes charity.
