A 70s revival might be taking fashion by storm this year but when it comes to hair it's the 60s era that is being headhunted. By Emma Harrowing,

There's a kind of 60s swing coming to the city in the next few weeks. Pops of colour, flower power and the occasional cloth headband signify a return to the decade that gave us the mini skirt and a kaleidoscope of colour.

The midi skirt and flares from the 70s might be tipped to be the trend for SS11, but the 60s is fighting back.

Shift dresses, mini floral tunics and denim hotpants are the nemesis of the floaty 70s. And the city has even more reason to celebrate the 60s as the stage show of Hairspray is coming to the Norwich Theatre Royal next month.

It's time to get your hairbrushes at the ready as the Hairspray musical celebrates the 60s with big hair and lots of styling products.

The musical is based upon the film written and directed by John Waters and a book by Mark O'Donnell and Thomas Meehan. The musical stars Brookside's Michael Starke and The Monkees' Micky Dolenz.

Set in Baltimore in 1962 the leading lady Tracy Turnblad has a passion to dance. She wins a spot on the local TV dance programme 'The Corny Collins Show' and is transformed into a teen celebrity overnight.

Tracy becomes a trendsetter in dance and fashion, but can she juggle her fame and win the heart of heartthrob Link Larkin without denting her 'do'?

The hair dos of the 60s are a big trend in 2011 – and we mean big, as hair goes glamorously bouffant this year.

Use extensions to add volume and accessorise with big hair clips, big corsages and big headbands.

The hair and beauty students at City College Norwich created hair and makeup looks for this week's Life Matters fashion shoot. Their interpretation of the 60s style includes beehives, twisted curls and bunches for the girls and slicked-back quiffs for the guys. Makeup is heavy on the eyes with false eyelashes and lots of black eyeliner. Lips were kept soft and peachy with pinks and neutrals.

Hairspray is at the Norwich Theatre Royal from Tuesday, February 1 until Saturday, February 12. For tickets call 01603 630000.
