10 reasons you cannot miss Porkstock in Norwich

Pig out and help raise money for Nelson’s Journey at Porkstock 2018.
The scent of mouth-watering local food will fill the air on October 13 when Porkstock returns to Norfolk Showground.
Now in its fifth year, and proudly raising funds for charity Nelson’s Journey, the free family event promises good, honest foodie fun in what is one of the county’s tastiest propositions.
“Every year we try to bring something new to the festival, whilst retaining its essential ‘Porkiness’,” says James Ellis, one of the founders of Porkstock.
“For 2018, visitors will see a brand new cookery demo stage featuring our best ever line up of top local chefs, including Richard Hughes from the Assembly House, Iain McCarten from the Last Wine Bar, Roger Hickman from Roger Hickman’s Restaurant and Richard Bainbridge from Benedicts.”
Music is a massive part of Porkstock from start to finish.
“Our headline act for the Evening Knees Up this year is the awesome Cut Capers,” says Ben Handford, another of the original Porkstock team. “Hailing from Bristol, the band performs an explosive mix of hip hop and swing and are favourites on the UK and Europe festival scene. They’re guaranteed to get everyone dancing. We also have local favourites Agent Orange on stage, who’ll be warming everyone up with some great covers and party tunes.”
“We couldn’t make Porkstock happen without the generosity of our sponsors: it is their financial support which underpins the event and allows us to raise much needed funds for Nelson’s Journey,” adds James.
Here are 10 reasons to get yourself to the event.
1. Food demo stage: Learn tips and tricks from the county’s top chefs. And between each demo there’ll be a mini auction so you can bid for a money-can’t-buy prize relating to each chef.
2. Street food: Make sure you arrive at Porkstock hungry because you’ll need lots of space to try the amazing range of street food on offer. From Meat the Bruce and his legendary giant Yorkshire puds filled with pulled pork, to incredible pizzas from the Wood Kitchen. And of course, lots of sausages!
3. Sausage making: New for 2018, Marsh Pig Charcuterie will be giving visitors the chance to make their own sausages. For a small fee (all of which goes to Nelson’s Journey) you can create your own signature bangers and take them home at the end of the day.
4. Norfolk Gin Cocktails: As well as donating lots of gin to help raise loads of money for Nelson’s Journey, Norfolk Gin (the one in the beautiful ceramic bottle) is reviving two early 1920s cocktails especially for Porkstock. You can try the Norfolk Gin Rickey and the Norfolk Gin Buck at the Evening Knees Up Gin Bar.
5. Norfolk Bingo: Choose a square in the hen coop and if our resident chicken chooses to poop on it, you’re a winner!
6. Squilla & Squidge: Porkstock isn’t just for meat eaters. Squilla & Squidge offer an awesome range of vegetarian and vegan street food from their beautiful VW Camper Van conversion.
7. Kids’ stuff: The Porkstock Kids’ Zone is run by volunteers from Nelson’s Journey. There will be loads of free craft activities and games for young visitors. Also check out the Cranswick Country Foods/Wayland Farms stand if you fancy a giant game of Pass the Pigs!
8. Try and buy: There will be loads of opportunities to stock up your fridge and your larder this year. From fresh meat from Butcher’s Shop of the Year, Archer’s Butchers, and produce from Walsingham Farm Shops, to local cheese, chutney, gin, charcuterie, cakes, confectionery, baked goods and wine.
9. Great tunes: Throughout the day, and at the Evening Knees Up, there’ll be some amazing music to eat, drink and dance to, from acoustic sets to the full on Cut Capers experience to end the night.
10. Nelson’s Journey: Please take time to say hello to the amazing volunteers from Nelson’s Journey. All the profits made at Porkstock go straight to the charity which provides support to bereaved children and young people in Norfolk.
