Norwich City chairman Ed Balls will be channeling his inner Fred Astaire this weekend on Strictly Come Dancing as he takes on the grace of the American Smooth.

But the former shadow chancellor has admitted that he does not know if he will be able to dance it beautifully.

He and his partner Katya Jones will be performing to the Tony Christie classic ‘Is This The Way To Amarillo’ and the 49-year-old will be hoping that the routine is not the way to the dreaded dance off.

He said: “I think the sort of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers dances do look beautiful but if I will be able to make them look beautiful is another matter.

“But that is the show you just have to go and do your best.”

The dancing-duo will want to improve after their paso doble which saw them receive the lowest score of the series with just 16 points for the routine.

And the American Smooth could not be further from the fiery paso doble. The dance is a form of ballroom dancing with an enhanced set of easy to perform, yet exciting steps. Partners are not required to have continuous body contact and lifts are allowed.

Speaking about the dance on Victoria Derbyshire on Monday Mr Balls said: “I’m worrying about Brexit, the Government and the Labour Party. However my biggest worry at the moment is my American Smooth foxtrot which I’ve got to do in four days time.

“You start on a Monday totally cold, never having done it ever before and you’ve got to get to a performance stage in four or five days so, as of today, I’m a bit stressed about that.”
