Relegated Wycombe Wanderers are reported to be ready to revive their interest in Norwich City midfielder Matthew Gill.

Wycombe tried to sign Gill on a free transfer from Exeter City last summer, but couldn't compete with the Canaries as the player returned to his home county, becoming former boss Bryan Gunn's first signing of the close season.

Gill made just 10 first team appearances, however, and started only two League One matches after Paul Lambert's arrival as manager last August. He is halfway through a two-year contract.

Wycombe boss Gary Waddock has made no secret of his admiration for the midfielder, who starred in the Conference and League Two for Exeter.

One stumbling block could be wages with Wycombe unlikely to be able to match Gill's salary but if that can be overcome they may be keen to revive the interest shown by previous boss Peter Taylor.

Highly-rated young midfielder Matt Phillips is poised to complete a 400,000 summer switch from Wycombe to Championship club Preston - funds which would allow Waddock to bolster his squad for a League Two promotion push.

Waddock was forced to release nine players following relegation to the bottom tier of English football before offering contracts to only half a dozen of his current squad.

After a rare outing in City's final away match at Bristol Rovers, 29-year-old Gill was philosophical about his lack of first team football.

"This season wasn't about how many games I've played, it was about the team getting back to where they belong," he said.

As for next season, he said: "I'll be exactly the same as I am everywhere I've been. I'll work as hard as I can and leave all the decisions to the management. I find that's the best way to be - just work as hard as you can and then take it from there."
