Norwich cyclist Emma Pooley is hoping she can to shake off a stomach bug ahead of tomorrow's 29km time trial at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi.

The 28-year-old had to overcome illness to finish 34th in Sunday's 112km road race, after doing much of the front-running for team-mate Lizzie Armitstead's silver medal.

And the recently crowned world time trial champion is hoping for a swift recovery to the bug which has swept through the Games village.

'Apparently the illness only lasts 24 hours so by then I should be fine,' said Pooley. 'I'll do my best – we'll see. 'I can't say what the result will be. You just have to ride as fast as you can. I hope to be feeling a bit better by then.'

Pooley, who took world time trial gold in Melbourne at the end of last month having won the British time trial and road race championships earlier in the year.

She is looking for a Commonwealth Games medal to go with the silver she won at the 2008 Olympics.

Pooley rode from the front for much of Sunday's race, protecting 21-year-old Armitstead for a sprint finish.

'I had a bit of an off day, I had been in bed all day feeling pretty sorry for myself,' said Pooley.

'The heat wasn't such a problem, I had stomach cramps and didn't feel great.

'It was worth doing because I know how strong Lizzie is in the sprint. She did really well, I'm proud of her.'
