There has been agony and ecstasy for the supporters on the Evening News' fans' panel in the first days of Euro 2012.

But former Norwich City player Cedric Anselin said the draw against England was a fair result for his home country, France.

'The French had a lot of possession but there was not enough creativity or penetration,' he said. 'Benzema was coming too deep. It was beautiful on the eye but there was not enough crossing.

'The French had to break quickly and they didn't and the English kept to their tactics well and worked hard.

'With Rooney missing, the English don't have a Nasri, Ribery or Benzema creating things so it was about lots of hard work and possession for them.

'Hodgson did his homework on the French.'

The second match in England's group saw hosts Ukraine come from a goal behind to beat Sweden 2-1.

Ian Hall, branch manager at Swedish bank Handelsbanken in Norwich, said: 'Understandably it is a disappointing result. They targeted this game as a must win to get them off to a good start.

'It is disappointing as the coach Erik Hamren plays more attacking football than the previous coach and they were hoping they would be able to get back into the game.'

The tournament continued last night, with two goals in the first six minutes seeing Czech Republic beat Greece 2-1 in Group A.

Kami Hurren, who lives in Unthank Road, Norwich and is a nurse at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, said: 'I think we did really well. To score two in six minutes, well hat's off to us really.

'I think we'll come out of the group and once we are out of the group we have a chance of going all the way.

'As long as Russia don't beat us, that is all I'm worried about, as they beat us at ice hockey!'

While the late match saw co-hosts Poland draw 1-1 with Russia, a result that was celebrated by our Poland representative Michael Walentynowicz.

He said: 'I'm still feeling full of emotions. The score wasn't great, it wasn't really expected, but it was really great that we didn't lose again.

'Part of my heart still believes that we can qualify, we still have the chance to beat Czech Republic and get second place.'

Anton Martinen, a partner at Rasputin Russian restaurant in Swaffham, said: 'The Russian coach needs to explain to the players that we need to be better in defence.'
