Norwich Sunday League back in business
Norwich Sunday League action resumes this weekend – with fewer teams but a more even league system.
One of the most enduring of sporting traditions, Sunday league football has been hugely affected by societal change.
But local league secretary Ben Casey is in a fortunate, if busy, position, as he administrates a set-up which has more than 1,200 registered players. It is a case of constantly adapting to ever-changing circumstances, but Casey is optimistic for the future of the league, whose joint sponsors include the Norwich Evening News.
Since the league’s AGM in June, more teams have gone to the wall. One club applied to include a reserve team – and then pulled that team and their first team out.
“Yes, we have our problems and we lose teams,” he said. “It’s frustrating, but we are really positive about the league set-up and believe it will be much more even and more competitive. Players don’t want to get heavily beaten each week, they lose interest, but we believe this is much better for everyone.”
