Organisers of a scheme which will bring improvements to a school site are celebrating an inspiring start to 2012.

The London Organising Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Games (Locog) has awarded its Inspire Mark – given to projects inspired by the Games – to Norwich-based Educational Centres Association (ECA) for its 2012 Going Green for Gold initiative.

The scheme will see Hewett School pupils and members of the community give their time and ideas to make a difference to the Cecil Road high school's grounds.

It was the brainchild of former Hewett School pupil Rachel Read, below, who designed a garden at the Olympic Park.

Bernard Godding, chief executive of the charity ECA, said: 'We are hoping to give the present-day pupils the same sense that, whatever their talents, inspiration, innovation and creativity have a big part to play in their future lives.

'Winning on the track or field or in water grabs the headlines but achievements in other parts of people's lives are equally important.'

As part of the scheme, the school will consult those who use the site, including from the local community, about possible improvements to the school site.

The Base, a school centre which supports families, is also involved in the initiative.

Emma Blake, children's services manager at The Base, said: 'We are delighted that the garden project has received this accolade and are looking forward to helping the local community engage with the exciting possibilities it offers.'
