Four 15-year-old Norwich Canoe Club kayak sprint athletes have achieved success for GB.

Grace Anderson (Wymondham College), Toby Booth (Langley School), Sofia Groves (Langley School) and Ben Want (Wymondham High Academy) were chosen to represent Great Britain at the Olympic Hopes Sprint Regatta in Poznan, Poland.

Countries from all over the world sent their top junior kayak sprint athletes to race over 200m, 500m and 1,000m.

All the Norwich paddlers reached semi-finals and recorded personal best times, showing they can perform on the big stage.

The pick of the results was the Booth/Want U15 K2 which ended the weekend ranked 15th in the world over 200m at under 16 level.

The athletes were supported by a team of dedicated Norwich parents and their NCC coach, Tim Scott.

Over the same weekend, 16-year-old Katy Walker (Wymondham College) was selected to race for the GB team at the French National Kayak Championship.

She partnered Katie Brookes of Worcester Canoe Club in K2 and the two had a strong race, finishing third. The following day, racing in her K1, she capsized near the start but got back in and paddled through the field to finish 13th showing great determination.

Norwich had two athletes – Tim Pendle (senior men's K1) and Luke Shaw (junior men's K1) – racing in the World Marathon Kayak Championships in Portugal.

Pendle fought it out with the fastest 10 flat water racing paddlers in the world for three laps of his 30K race, holding his own, but eventually the relentless pace took its toll and he finished a creditable 18th.

Shaw also held his own in the top group for three laps but fell on one the portages, where athletes run with the boat, and he finished a strong eighth.

All these athletes can be seen in action at Norwich Canoe Club on Whitlingham Lane, Trowse, at the National Hasler finals on Sunday September 30, where teams from all around the UK will be competing. There are teas and cakes for sale and spectators are welcome. Racing starts at 9.30am.
