New signing Tom Trybull has already played his first game in the yellow and green of Norwich City, helping the under-23 squad to a 2-2 friendly draw with Burnley at Colney.

The German midfielder, whose signing was only confirmed by the Canaries earlier today, started the behind-closed-doors match and completed 56 minutes against the Clarets.

The game also allowed Steven Naismith to get 90 minutes under his belt, as he will miss the first two games of City’s season due to suspension.

The match was the final pre-season warm-up for Matt Gill’s squad ahead of their Premier League Two opener against Brighton at Colney on Monday, August 14.

Trial striker Pierre Fonkeu opened the scoring early on and played an hour as negotiations with Club Brugge continue over his signing, firing home after being teed up by Todd Cantwell.

Diallang Jaiyesimi made it 2-0 to the hosts shortly before half-time with a fine individual effort but Burnley hit back to claim a draw.

U23s boss Gill was pleased with the test provided by the Premier League club’s development squad.

“It was a fantastic learning opportunity for the lads,” said Gill. “We were really good in the first half and everything positive we spoke about at half-time, we perhaps didn’t carry that on in the second half.

“As far as the development point of view goes, it was a fantastic learning 45 minutes for the lads. The movement, passing, interchange and the real care we had in the first half wasn’t quite there in the second half, which is fantastic for the lads to realise that they need to carry on doing the things they were successful doing in the first half.

“Some of the stuff first half was excellent. We seemed to play with lots of freedom in the top half of the pitch which was good.

“The back-line distributed the ball well and, as a whole, we played with lots of freedom and looked really good and probably could have had a couple more goals in the first half.”

The U23s started off with a 4-1 win at King’s Lynn Town, before a 2-1 win over SC SC Rot-Weiß Oberhausen during City’s pre-season training camp in Germany, also losing 2-1 to Eintracht Braunschweig U23s.

They then returned to England and were beaten 3-2 away at National League side Sutton United, before concluding their preparations against the Clarets.

“We’ve had varied opposition. We’ve exposed the lads to different styles and we played an U23 group today and men’s teams in Germany,” Gill continued, speaking to City’s website. “We played Sutton as well so they’ve been exposed to all sorts.

“They’ve been exposed to lots of different stuff at the training ground about how we want to go about this season. We’ve tried to get as much information into the boys as we can so it’s been really good.

“Today finishes pre-season off quite nicely. The lads have been excellent during the whole of pre-season. They’ve given everything physically that we’ve asked of them, took of lots of things tactically and we’re really looking forward to coming in Monday and building up to the first league game.”
